Welcome to Curly's BOINC page

A warm welcome to you.

I am Curly Brackets and this is my home page. I offer you a place to relax and to talk to me and other uses. There's a forum on this site, there's a guest book and there's a contact form you can use. This site is mostly about my BOINC career, therefore the forum contains a section dedicated to BOINC matters.

BOINC Stats

To the left you see a graphic representation of my BOINC statistics that should get updated every half hour or so.

Unfortunately it can only grab statistic data from those projects that are online, so a couple of them will always remain blank.

For those who don't know about BOINC:

BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing and it's a non-commercial framework for distributed or grid computing. It stems from the SETI@home project of the University of California in Berkeley and was developed further to form a framework that can be used for other things than SETI@home. The SETI client could be used only for SETI@home, and as it was one of the first pieces of software for distributed computing, security was not really an issue. Therefore people started to cheat, which is bad news for a scientific project.

Enter the BOINC platform, which takes grid computing a step further. BOINC was first introduced in 2002. Everybody can join in, download the BOINC client onto your loal machine and start with one or several of many available projects. BOINC would use idle times of your machine to do calculations and sent back results in the background. Work is downloaded in the background in chunks, called work units, and finished work units are sent back to be verified and you are granted credit for finished work units. There's nothing to be gained financially - on the contrary: Your computer would use a bit more electricity with BOINC running - but then it's fun to see your credits piling up!
